Lock-down supermarket shopping 101

We all need to eat, and depending on what level of Lock-down we are on, what our personal barriers and beliefs are, we all need to do our food shopping.

Here are the basics on what you need to know.

Firstly, during all levels of lock-down, we can do our supermarket shopping whether in person or online. Here is a basic guide to different rules and restrictions based on our level of lock-down.

Level 3 & 4 Lock-down food shopping guide

  1. Do online shopping if you can

  2. Go to the supermarket alone or send a support person

  3. Sanitize hands and use wipes provided at the supermarket for shopping trolleys

  4. Keep 2 metre apart

  5. Use the Tracing App if you can

Level 2 & 1 Lock-down food shopping guide

  1. Do online shopping if you prefer

  2. Sanitize hands and use wipes provided at the supermarket for shopping trolleys

  3. Keep 1-2 metre apart

  4. Use the Tracing App if you can

The government has advised that it is always a good idea to keep a note of where you have been and who you have seen on what days. This way it will be easy to trace if someone were to get sick.

CAN I STILL GO TO THE SUPERMARKET AND BE SAFE?

Yes, all supermarkets follow strict government rules to keep everyone safe.

1. Sanitise

There are sanitizing stations at the entrance to supermarkets as well as wipes. Sanitise your hands and use the wipes to wipe down the handle of your trolley before after you have touched it.

2. Social Distancing

Remember to keep 2 metres distance between people. The supermarkets have social distancing marked out for you at the counters and when waiting in line to enter the supermarket.

3. Contact Tracing

It is not necessary to fill in contact tracing forms manually at the supermarket. However, all businesses including supermarkets have the Contact Tracing App code displayed. Use your mobile phone to scan the app.

If you would like to use the Contact Tracing App but you are unsure if you have the App or how to use it, please contact us or your support worker before you go the supermarket.

Can my support worker take me to the supermarket?

Yes, Support Worker's are essential workers and are able to work at all levels of lock-down. If your support worker would normally take you, they can continue to do so.

Do I need to wear a mask?

The Ministry of Health recommends wearing a mask or other face coverings such as a bandanna or a scarf if you do not have a mask. This is always a good idea if you are at high risk.

Can I take the bus to the supermarket?

Yes, public transport is still running at Level 2. Make sure you social distance 1-2 metres away from other people and remember to sanitise.

Do I need to contract trace on the bus?

The Government has advised that at Alert Level 2, people can travel, but should do it in a safe way and keep a record of their journey. Your registered Bee card can work as your contract tracing log. If you do not have a Bee card you can register your travel with us at: Passenger Contact tracing

If you do not have a Bee Card, please contact us or your support worker for help.

It is very important that you do not visit the supermarket or travel on public transport if you are unwell.

What if I don't feel safe going to the supermarket?

Good news, online shopping is a great option for when you can't get out or you don't feel safe going out.

Where can I shop?

Countdown, New World, and Pak n Save all offer online shopping. There are different rules for each supermarket. Here are the main ones that might effect our vulnerable communities:
